About the Project
Food is part of our everyday life and it is omnipresent for most of us. But our food not only satiates us, it also has an enormous impact on the environment, on people and society. Food production makes up about 25% of global greenhouse gas emissions and is therefore strongly responsible for the climate crisis and its consequences. At the same time, a growth-based capitalist economy dominates our current food system. Here, human rights are often ignored due to abysmal working conditions and animals are primarily considered as commodities. This system promotes global inequalities, reproduces colonial structures and destroys our environment. In the last few years the social debate on this issue has grown a lot stronger but our food consumption still remains to be anything but peaceful.
Food is for sure also important in volunteer projects and youth exchanges. Cooking and Eating can bring a group together. It can show you how similar and how different people are, helps you to get satisfied and happy as well as to keep your physical and mental strength during an intensive project.
The project “A daily plate of peace and non-violence: How our values should and can be represented in our food consumption” aimed to strengthen a sustainable and just food consumption in SCI projects and the environment of all participants. The project raised awareness and promoted critical reflection of current practices of food consumption as a key part of youth exchanges, seminars, trainings and other voluntary projects. It was co-funded by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union and divided into three trainings/seminars in 2018 and 2019. The Publications
The Cookbook
The cookbook is divided into two large chapters in which tips and tricks for conscious cooking in groups are given and many recipes for a plant-based, regional and seasonal diet during group projects are presented. The cookbook is addressed to everyone who wants to cook in a responsible way with groups of young people or adults.
The Toolkit
The toolkit is divided into four large chapters in which tips and tricks for conscious cooking in groups are presented, many methods of non-formal education on the topic are explained, background knowledge is summarized and references to other interesting materials are given. The toolkit is addressed to everyone who wants to work with young people, adults and groups on the problems, effects and alternatives of our food system.
